Does Instagram Tell You When Someone Blocks You?
No. Instagram does not send any notification when someone blocks you. You will not receive an alert, email, or in-app message. The only way to find out is by looking for specific signs.
This is intentional — Instagram protects the privacy of users who choose to block others. But the signs are easy to spot once you know what to look for.
2. Their Profile Shows "No Posts Yet"
If you can access their profile through a direct link or old DM, but it shows "No Posts Yet" with zero posts, followers, and following counts — you are blocked.
A blocked profile looks like a blank account. The profile picture may still be visible, but all content is hidden from you.
3. Your DMs Are Still There But You Cannot Message Them
Check your DM conversation with the person. If you were previously messaging, the conversation history will still be there, but:
- Messages not delivered: New messages you send will show only one check mark (sent) but never two (delivered).
- Profile link broken: Tapping their name at the top of the conversation leads to the blank "No Posts Yet" profile.
- Group chats: You can still see them in group chats, but tapping their profile from the group will show the blank page.
5. You Cannot Tag or Mention Them
Try tagging the person in a post or mentioning them in a comment using @username. If their account does not appear in the suggestions, they have blocked you.
This is one of the most reliable tests because it specifically indicates that your account is restricted from interacting with theirs.
7. Check from a Different Account
The definitive test: log into a different Instagram account (or ask a friend to check). If the person's profile appears normally from another account but shows blank from yours, you are 100% blocked.
You can also check while logged out by visiting instagram.com/username in a browser. If the profile loads normally there, you are blocked on your main account.
Blocked vs. Deactivated vs. Unfollowed — How to Tell the Difference
Not every sign means you are blocked. Here is how to distinguish between blocking, account deactivation, and unfollowing:
- Blocked: Profile appears blank from your account but normal from other accounts. DMs still exist but cannot send new ones.
- Deactivated: Profile does not appear from ANY account. The username does not exist anywhere. They temporarily disabled or permanently deleted their account.
- Unfollowed: Their profile looks completely normal. You can see posts and stories. They simply removed you from their followers list.
- Restricted: Profile looks normal. You can still follow and comment, but your comments are only visible to you. DMs go to message requests.
